What is the process of facilitating a lacrosse team at your school?
The best way to accomplish this is to:
Identify a group of students wanting to play lacrosse from your
school and enter them as a team within a recreational lacrosse
league, such as FLY Lacrosse League. You must demonstrate that
there are kids already committed.
Identify a Faculty Sponsor. Ideally this should be a
long-standing coach and/or teacher at the school; someone who has a
positive relationship with both the Athletic Director and Principal.
Write a short proposal for a Lacrosse "Activities
Club" to your school's athletic director covering:
Purpose of the club, i.e. to offer girl's lacrosse to students in
the Spring. Include the names
and signatures of the student players and their parents, other
students and parents, faculty sponsor and all who support the school having this
activities club. Your proposal should state that
you will incorporate as a legal entity, non-profit, e.g. XYZ
Lacrosse Club, LLC dba Mustang Lacrosse (HS Mascot). Identify
qualified coaching candidates. You might be able to find a
parent to coach from a nearby league for free. This will get
your proposal accepted; however, once you have the club approval you
should find a qualified coach that has the expertise and time.
You'll end up paying this person between $1,500 - $2,000 for the
season.
Should your school say that there is no field availability to accommodate this sport,
that's no problem. Your club can use the FlyLax fields to play
your games. If you are not within our geo-region
then you can play your home games away.
Should your school say that they cannot financially support the
startup of the program, that's no problem. The cost is paid by the
players. $250 per player is the most it should cost per player
to cover uniforms, equipment, umpire fees, field rentals and
coaching stipend. The field equipment such as goals can be
obtained through the US Lacrosse grant program, which is offered
every year. If you are using the FlyLax fields, we have fully
lined fields with goals. For Broward County schools missing
the US Lacrosse deadline for applying for an equipment grant, the
East Broward YMCA can loan you the field equipment until you
qualify and have received the equipment.
What about practice times? You do not need fully lined fields
with goals to practice. Small practice fields are ideal for
learning as everyone touches the ball more. There will always be available space
at your school or through a neighborhood park. You do not need
official size goals to replicate the game environment. Two
sticks in the ground six feet wide works just fine. It is
called bootstrapping.
Colleges in Florida offering lacrosse include...
Many of these college players came from Florida
High School Lacrosse Championship
teams, the current State tournament held under US Lacrosse.
Lacrosse has been recognized by the Florida High School Athletic
Association (" FHSAA"). Lacrosse is expected to be
sanctioned by FHSAA within the year.
