GLOSSARY OF SAQ TERMS
(Speed, Agility & Quickness)
Acceleration The rate of the increase in the speed of a
mass. For athletes, this can generally only be done for 6 -7
seconds.
Agility The act of organizing, with control, varieties of
movements and directions.
Biomechanics Most efficient movement skills possible to produce
and generate force. These can be general or sport specific.
Concentric Shortening of a muscle.
Dorsiflex To load the ankle before contact with the ground by
pulling the toes up toward the shin to a maximal flexed position.
Eccentric Lengthening of a muscle.
Impulse The moment of change of muscle contraction from
eccentric to concentric or the reverse.
Maximum Velocity The maximum rate of speed any mass can
travel.
Physiologic Chemical makeup of the body's stored energy to
facilitate muscular contraction. There are three types of energy
systems: anaerobic (0 to 15 sec), lactate (10 to 120 sec) and
aerobic (long term sustained movement).
Plantarflex To fully extend the ankle joint at take off from
the ground. The act of pushing away from the ground.
Plyometric Any exercise that enlists a stretch reflex of a
muscle system. Generally there is greater stress applied to the
eccentric phase of muscle contraction followed by a rapid change to
concentric contraction generating greater force production.
Plyoquicknic Low impact exercises that enlist repeated very
fast movement with a limited range of motion.
Powermetric Greater range of motion exercises that enlist
maximal effort and intensity.
Powermetrics generally put much greater stress on the muscular
system.
Quickness An impulse action to any stimulus for a short
distance or time.
Speed The rate at which a mass moves.
Triple Extension Simultaneous maximum extension of the hip,
knee, and ankle joints.
