The YMCA and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Youth Lacrosse Leagues
("FlyLax") provide a convenient venue for high school players who
desire additional training and games in preparation for their high
school season; and younger age players eager to train for the future. Since beginning in January 2006 over
650 participants have
benefited from our lacrosse programs, representing over thirty different
schools.
Our league is unaffiliated with FHSAA,
BCAA or any high school. Our league is a competitive/recreational
league. We have been instrumental in
training all levels of players from Cardinal Gibbons, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Pine Crest, University
School, North Broward Prep, Cypress Bay, Douglas, Taravella, Nova and
South Plantation. During your school's spring high
school season you will play in either the FHSAA League or IA League (Club).
The Fall Ball League is your personal fall training league to prepare
for your school's official Spring season.
There are now five varsity girls/boys programs in
Broward County competing in the 2008 FHSAA league including Pine Crest, University
School, Cardinal Gibbons, St. Thomas and North Broward Prep; and high school club teams
competing in the US Lacrosse administered IA League including Stoneman
Douglas, Cypress Bay, Nova and Taravella. Additionally, there are
boys-only teams at American Heritage, Pembroke Pines and Western
competing in the FHSAA league; and
many other schools interested in fielding teams.
We are
actively pursuing all area high school parents looking for assistance in
starting up their high school lacrosse team. We will
train all girls and coaches to help facilitate the development of your
high school program. The BCAA sanctions high school sports for public high schools
in Broward County.
It is widely expected the BCAA will sanction lacrosse once at least ten (10) of
these member schools agree to adopt lacrosse. At present, the count stands
at eight (8).
Very important ...many parents
do not sign up their children for some activities because of scheduling
conflicts with other activities. While they would like their child
to participate, they believe it is rude to the coach not to show up to
all or most of the practices or a games. That is NOT the way we
want you to look at lacrosse. We do not care how often your child
cannot attend practices or games, all we want to do is teach this game
to them. We will gladly work with whatever time you give us; 10,
25, 50%... whatever.

and
Commitments
Is the Greater Fort Lauderdale Youth Lacrosse League a travel
club or travel league?
We are a league not a travel club; and
all games are at a single location, unlike travel leagues. Individuals
register to play in the league and are assigned to a team. Our league consists of recreational and competitive aka "travel level" players; age U8-U19 (Under 19 years of age).
The YMCA sends teams to tournaments within state and nationally.
If you are a league participant and interested in playing
email
us.
What is the philosophy of the league?
Develop the
players - the winning will come How does the league and coaches communicate
with players and parents? Through the league web site
schedule. Information is updated daily,
or more often. This is your official source of
information. We do not call you or email.
Rosters and game schedules are posted at the beginning of the season.
All registered players will receive a schedule and team roster. It is your responsibility to
know when and where your team is playing before leaving home. If
you get to the field and do not know where to go, see Olaf Henke, YMCA
Sports Program Director.
Why are all practice sessions conducted on a league-wide basis together?
Qualified girl's lacrosse trainers are very hard to find in Florida,
especially in South Florida. We are very fortunate to have a large staff
with extensive experience. So we leverage their available time for all.
When are practices?
In season, we offer training for all levels including those just beginning every
M/W from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. Some seasons we offer sessions on Tuesday and Thursday
evenings based on enrollment.
Where do I purchase lacrosse equipment?
The Sports Authority or online at stores
like Sports Her Way.
Mouth-guards, goggles and cleats are mandatory, no exceptions. This
applies to all practices and games. Sneakers will not be allowed.
Where are the participants coming from?
The league has participants from all
over the Broward County, Palm Beach County and Miami Dade County;
including St. Thomas Aquinas High School, St Andrews, Cardinal
Gibbons High School, North Broward Prep, Pine Crest, Fort Lauderdale
High, Spanish River, Taravella, Coral Springs Charter, Coral Springs
Christ, University School, Western, Northeast High, Westminster
Academy, Stranahan, Plantation, Nova, Dwyer, Park Vista, American
Heritage, Pompano Beach High School, Coral Springs, Archbishop
McCarthy, Weston, Cardinal Newman, Belen Jesuit, Gulliver, Palmetto,
Stoneman Douglas, Pope John Paul, Boca Raton, Cypress Bay, Sunrise,
Highland Christian, Palmer Trinity and other area high schools.
While many teams will form with students from specific high schools,
other participants may opt to play alongside friends from various
schools. We support any combination that encourages
participants to play this great game.
Middle school participants include Pine Crest, Westminster, St.
Anthony's, St Coleman's, St. Mark's Episcopal, North Broward Prep,

What
schools in South Florida
have lacrosse programs?
Lacrosse is a recognized sport by the Florida High School
Athletic Association (FHSAA). Lacrosse is
expected to become a FHSAA
sanctioned sport in 2008. What are the top girls high school
lacrosse teams in Florida?The
final rankings for the
2008 Girls High School Lacrosse Season are now official. The
2008 FHSAA State Champion is Vero Beach with a victory over Palm
Beach County's Park Vista High School. Vero Beach won the 2007
and 2006 state titles run by US Lacrosse before FHSAA took over in
2008. Congratulations. Broward County Pine Crest knocked
off St. Thomas in the district finals before losing to St. Andrews
in regional play. St. Andrews then lost to Park Vista in Regional
Finals. Great Job to all
the girls in the State of Florida. Your leadership and
inspiration has put the State of Florida in the forefront of
lacrosse in the United States.
What are the YMCA Lacrosse League
seasons?
Spring (Mar-May)
Fall (Sept-Nov)
If you want to be added to the email notification list for a
specific season, email
YLacrosse
with the season you are interested in.
Does the
Lacrosse League offer girls' lacrosse camps?
In 2006 we held
five "all girls" camps to meet the
demand of our tri-county youth. In 2007, many women
stepped up and began offering their own camps and now we are
recommending these for your participation.
Nutrition
Lacrosse is a diverse game and so are the requirements it
places on the player’s body. As a result of the sweating during
a match, the lacrosse players can loose from about 2 to up to 7
lb from their body weight. Dehydration may occur, which could
lead to poor thermoregulation and prevent adequate oxygen and
energy supply to the muscle tissue.
