The Warriors took bragging rights along with the inaugural High
School Division championship of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Youth
Lacrosse League, defeating the Blue Angles 11-10 in the spring
season title game at Holiday Park.
Midfielder Ali Battista went the length of the field in the game's
waning moments to score the winning goal.
"Both teams showed a remarkable level of speed, agility and
stickwork skills, " program director Bob Motta said.
The Warriors were led by Brooke Kennedy, Erin Kelley and Devin
Kelly. The midfield was led by Battista and Katie Ropes. Rachel
Adkins and Kristie Newbauer anchored the defense and Lauren Battista
hung tough in goal. The Warriors were coached by John Kelley.
"These were some of the most incredible girls I ever had the
privilege to play with," said Warriors captain Ropes, a Cardinal
Gibbons student who hopes to play college lacrosse.
Leading the Blue Angels were attackers Megan Harmon, Cheyenne
Allenby and Sarah Motta. At midfield were Lindsey Labate, Katherine
Clementi and Jasmine Docal. On defense were Lauren Holsinger and
Lane Sasser. Shantel Jairam and Madison Ravine shared goalkeeping
duties. The team was coached by Terri Docal.
The Golden Tater Tots and the Stingrays tied for third place.
The lacrosse league signed up about 75 players for its first season.
Although interest among girls has been slow in other South Florida
leagues starting up, the Fort Lauderdale league, operated through
the East Broward Family YMCA, found its greatest interest to be
among the girls.
"In this first season, the league registered more than 40 girls,"
Motta said.
The league will offer summer and fall seasons and four summer
lacrosse camps for girls. Registration for summer season and the
camps is underway.
