WEATHER HOTLINE (954)334-9622 (ext 230)
We will play in moderate rain as long as there is no lighting within
6-12 miles of the field. We must wait at least 30 minutes from last
lightning before restarting.
We usually update the Weather Hotline 60 minutes before practice when
the outlook is 50/50.
Proper Shelter During Lightning
A building or house, that is fully enclosed is proper and best.
Unsafe and dangerous areas of shelter include tents, open pavilions, bus
stops, trees and bleachers.
Myth: Cars are safe because of rubber tires.
Truth: Cars are safe because of the metal shell.
30-30 Rule
Use the 30-30 rule. When you see lightning, count the time (1-one
thousand, 2-two thousand, etc.). If you count 30 seconds or less, and
hear the thunder, get to shelter post haste. Immediately get to proper
shelter. Then wait 30 (or more) minutes after hearing the last thunder
clap, to leave shelter.
The flash to bang (sight of lightning to sound of thunder) time is 30
seconds, that means the strike is about 6 miles away.
Since sound travels around a mile in five seconds at the Earth's
surface, if you see lightning and hear thunder five second later the
lightning is about a mile away. A USATODAY.com graphic on How to
estimate lightning's distance has more information.
Parents
We do not recommend dropping your child off at field and leaving unless
you have arranged for someone to act on your behalf. In the event of
adverse weather your child needs clear directions on what to do. Do not
leave the field until you have educated your child. We recommend you
stay and watch your child play during their time at our field.
